What Are Nursing Compact States?

Travel nurses have many options when it comes to choosing the right location for them, but changing locations frequently can present several challenges in terms of licenses. However, the process is simpler in some areas that participate in the NLC. Navigating the complexities of licensing is crucial for travel nurses, but those in NLC-participating states experience a streamlined process, allowing seamless practice across borders.

In fact, all of the compact states are a part of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC).  Overall, the NLC is an agreement among several states to recognize the licenses of nurses in all participating compact areas. For instance, nurses who have obtained licenses in one of the following states are allowed to practice in any other nursing compact state without having to obtain any new or additional licenses. As of 2022, there are 39 states that participate in the NLC.

Most importantly, compact states not only allow travel nurses’ licenses to transfer easily between states, but they also allow work history and other important information to transfer easily as well. In addition, to making it easier to transfer important information, having the NLC speeds up the hiring profess while also eliminating additional applications or fees. Generally,  RNs, LPNs and LVNs are all able to reap the benefits of this streamlined transfer process. Most importantly, having the NLC allows travelers to book assignments one after the other a lot easier.

Although, travel nurses have plenty of options in non-compact states, many travel nurses will find the process of finding new work in one of the 39 listed above nursing to be a smooth and a simple transition.
