Summer in Winston-Salem Means Fun for Travelers

No, not that Salem—you won’t witness any witch trials here. Instead, medical travelers are spending their summer months sipping sweet tea in the South while enjoying fantastic food, beautiful natural sites and killer concerts. Check out a few of the places that’re bringing the heat to Winston-Salem, NC!

Food Festivals

Who doesn’t like a great glass of wine? Head to Tanglewood park—located just 20 minutes outside Winston-Salem—for the 19th annual North Carolina Wine Festival on May 25. Whether you’re a vino fiend or not, this event has wine, beers and ciders from wineries and breweries across the state including Native Vines Winery, Bull City Ciderworks, Pig Pounder Brewery, Stony Mountain Vineyards and more.

It wouldn’t be a trip to the South without some good ol’ fashioned ribs. June 7 at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds, you’ll get your fair share at the 14th annual Twin City Ribfest. Their slogan is “Hot Ribs, Cool Music,” but to be honest, you had us at “hot ribs.”

For a vegetarian-friendly food festival option, head to the 3rd annual Triad Vegfest June 22 in Greensboro—just a half hour outside Winston-Salem. All the proceeds go toward building sustainable farms and education for youth, and the event has activities for all ages.

Nature Adventures

Just 10 minutes from downtown Winston-Salem lies Salem Lake. This seven-mile trail and 365-acre lake is perfect for those days when you need to get out of the city without a two-hour drive to get where you need to be.

To really take a day off, unplug and unwind, try Pilot Mountain State Park. While it’s a slightly longer drive—about 25–30 minutes from downtown Winston-Salem—the trails are moderate and the views are stunning.

Concerts & Events

There’s nothing quite like a summer concert. From Alan Jackson to Boyz II Men, there’s sure to be some sweet tunes that tickle your fancy in Winston-Salem.

The day starts at 8 a.m. for check in and some stretching before a quick run at 9 a.m. (one mile or a 5k, your choice), then you’ll wind down with a yoga session followed by guided meditation. The afternoon will bring out local vendors with snacks, drinks and handmade goods for sale.

Sports more your style? Check out Fireworks Night with the Winston-Salem Dash—they city’s home baseball team—every Friday throughout the summer. If you can swing it (get it? swing?) head down Thursdays as well for their Thirsty Thursday night.
